Why do my charging stats or kWh values look different from my car or charger?

For some vehicles, particularly plug-in hybrids, Gridio does not always receive real charging power data from the car. In these cases, we have to estimate the charging power.

If you notice that the charging bars shown in the app are higher than what your car is actually using, this also affects the total kWh values accordingly. The savings calculation is based on the same data, so estimated power values will carry through to the savings numbers.

How does Gridio calculate savings?

Gridio calculates your savings by comparing two scenarios:

  1. What you actually paid: Based on the real charging power and duration during each hour or 15-minute interval, multiplied by the actual spot price at that time.
  2. What you would have paid without Gridio: We look at when your vehicle was plugged in and assume it would have charged the same total amount immediately from that moment. We calculate what that would have cost at the prices during those hours.

The difference between these two values is your saving.
